Updates on various committees were provided as below:

  • Finance (update from Gail) -Total of $60449 was received for the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal for 2004 falling short by only $7050 of the target $67500; This year's goal is $69300; Sue and Gail to write up a general appeal for this year's annual appeal to be announced at masses; Gail to weave parish mission statement with finance talk; A bid for cutting trees was received from Lorail (uncertain of the spelling)

  • Buildings & Grounds (update from Al) - Mens washroom work done, some more left; Drinking water fountain fixed, Currently washing down all chairs and refinishing them; Doors will require external help, as too heavy; Al took a look at the Handicapped restroom leaking issue - hard to diagnose but will take another look.

  • Catholic Formation (update from Kevin) - Tuesday faith formation group meetings had a few breaks due to Volunteer party, Handwritten Bible presentation held on some of the Tuesdays; Father Farisy's healing mass was well attended, Guest choir was from Antioch at no charge. Next Healing Masses are on Aug18th and Oct 27th. Thanks acknowledged to Anthony (Ngocs husband) for helping install the screen for the Hand Written Bible presentation.; Thursday at Crowne Plaza (1-800-787-8707 xtn 4011) "Whole Community Cathechsis" open to all

  • Parish Life (update from Gail - on behalf of Robin) - Crab feed March 5th is on target; Is being viewed more as a community builder than a huge fund raiser; Spaghetti feed by Youth Group is on January 30th ; March 24th potluck - need to find staff member to organize it as Gail is not available. ; Women's retreat is on 25th February (Gail is in charge); Mention was made about a Penitential service(didn't catch complete details); Christmas pageant was not held at 10.30 mass (2 parents complained their children did not have opportunity to participate); 4.00 pm mass was a success for the children's pageant ; Elaine has suggested for next year that the 10.30 am be a youth mass so youth participation is possible around Christmas.

  • Public Affairs (update from Paul) - 50 passenger Bus was arranged (there were more people than seats available) for the West Coast Walk for life on Jan 22nd; "Souper Bowl" (collection for soups) is on Feb 6th; Article on the Hand Written Bible presentation held at St Luke's will be in article in the San Jose Catholic - per Fr Jack);

  • Social Justice (update from John) - No additional update - apart from the Walk for life on January 22nd mentioned earlier by Paul.

Discuss Parish Goals for 2005

  • Al reminded goal from last meeting to reflect on red book
  • Has some points in mind but not sure how to go about it (not deliberative, but collaborative)
  • Al feels 6 of 8 goals are applicable to St. Luke's, Fr. Jack should decide which goals to focus on this year
  • Members asked to read section 3 of red booklet
  • JoAnn distributed and discussed a handout on her thoughts on goals for 2005
  • John thought it was important to have a follow up to the RCIA program - to reinforce the faith of the new entrants.
  • Fr. Jack asked to focus on how to get people to turnout
  • Paul/JoAnn : how to get people first into church and then to into the Community space (instead of the other way around).
  • Brief discussion on making some kind of announcement that will help fostering vocations to the priesthood/deacons/religious life, eg. the fact that the average age of seminarians in the US is 36 years - meaning it is not too late to pursue this vocation.
  • Not sure what happened to the "Cross for Vocations Program" that was to be followed in the parish.
  • Fr. Jack mentioned considering a door to door census on nominal Catholics
