Parish Council Minutes
Minutes of the meeting April 18, 2005

Members/Staff present: - Fr. Jack, Al Huber, Kevin Lucia, Paul Lucia, Mary True, George Arackaparambil, JoAnn Kozloski, Ngoc Anh Nguyen, Gail Castro

Following handouts were distributed by Al Huber : -

  • Minutes of the last meeting

  • Agenda for current meeting

Meeting began with Opening Prayer by Al Huber

This was followed by approval of minutes of the previous parish council meeting held on 21st March. The following corrections to the April-18th minutes were noted and stand corrected as below:

  • The Parish Retreat Video series were on Tuesday nights (not Thursday nights. The Lenten Reflections were what were held on Thursdays).

  • Reference to Mike McDermott was corrected to Mike McDevitt (in relation to the Reunion Retreat in Fall).

  • Incorrect spelling : Sacresty was corrected as Sacristy.

Updates on various committees were provided as below:

  • Finance (update from Gail) - So far there have been 22 donors to the Annual Appeal - covering 42% of the $76,000 goal. Collections to date are a little better than last year ; Finance council meets tomorrow - agenda amongst other items includes consideration to paint the building, replace toilet.

  • Buildings & Grounds (update from Al) - Few repairs were made, normal stuff, nothing significant - also 2 toilet floats replaced by plumber ; North and East sides of the building are in need of painting ; Fr. Jack brought up that decision is to be made whether painting should be done by a contractor or a group of volunteers; Was suggested that maybe we should get some bids; Gail added that Painting task is affordable per the budget ; Per Al - 2 doors may be better off with painting than varnishing ;

  • Catholic Formation (update from Kevin) - 2 more weeks to go on the Parish Retreat video ; Tuesday night attendees were polled for subjects/new topics for coming weeks ; Thursday night focus on Eucharist ends on May 12 ; Reunion retreat is planned for Sat-September 17th (8.00 am - 4.00 pm) ; Question was posed on whether to have a reunion retreat for attendees from last retreat or to have a different topic for the whole parish (no decision was made to change the original agenda) ; This Saturday night is confirmation ; First Holy Communion Mass on 30th April at 5.00 pm and 1st May at the 10.30 am mass.

  • Parish Life (update from Fr. Jack) - There will be no Youth Mission Trip this year ; Suggestion for San Francisco (instead of a far away location) for the Youth Mission this year did not work out due to lack of interest/sponsors ; Elaine will focus on leadership training for Youth instead ; Parish Picnic - shooting for Thurs, Sept 8th ; Al suggested setting up schedule and to reserve the picnic spot; Was decided NOT to have an all day annual meeting of the Pastoral Council in September - but instead have a 12.00 - 4.00 pm session on Sunday at the Church. This would also replace the monthly meeting in September. Which Sunday in September for this meeting to be decided.

  • Public Affairs (update from Paul) and Social Justice (update from John) - (Day of legislation - April 26th in Sacramento - lobbying on issues of interest to Catholics); Vitae Caring - another programme scheduled for July 4th Weekend.

Parish Directory: subcommittee report

  • (Ngoc Anh, John, Al, Kevin) met with Busson and Olan Mills and had additional meeting with salesmen and amongst themselves.
  • Summary of comparisons between Olan Mills vs Busson was distributed.
  • They recommend Busson over Olan Mills - if we decide to go for a directory this year (because Busson provides more and is cheaper for the parishioner , provides graphic artist versus Olan not providing one, etc - more details of differences provided in the handouts that were distributed)
  • Contrary to general belief that end June thru beginning September may not be a good time for scheduling the photo shoots (since people are out of town), Busson has suggested targeting July/August and again in September for this activity.
  • Being considered are the last weekend in July or August(5/6th) and September(9/10th)
  • Question was posed :- Should we announce to Parish asking for a coordinator for this event (to be decided).

New Business

  • Paul distributed a flyer on "Into The Light Productions" by Michael Reardon. Michael was willing to perform for an honorary fee of $1800. No decision made on this - as it was uncertain if the money could be recovered by sufficient tkts being sold for the performance;
  • Oct-18th is the feast of St. Luke;
  • JoAnn suggested considering a Speaker Series planned over the year that could be published to the Parish - or having some play acts for children that would attract attendance by parishioners;
  • Another topic briefly mentioned was HolyLand Tours ;
  • Al circulated a letter from Archdiocese inviting members to a meeting with Archbishop Levada (May 14th St.Mary's 9.30 am 12.30 noon). Al, John, Kevin and George signed up to go.

Donut Duty List

  • Was distributed and filled by members present.

Assignments for next time
